7. Genuineness and Authenticity

7.1 How do you recognise a genuine silver coin or medal?

Explanation of the issue 

It is important for collectors to enjoy their collector coins and medals, but they also value owning a valuable original product. In addition to the collector's value, the material value also plays a role for many coins and medals. Therefore, the question often arises as to how a genuine silver coin or medal can be recognised and which characteristics are particularly important for assessment.

 

Answer

Unfortunately, sought-after collector's items are sometimes also the target of counterfeiters. For this reason, manufacturers of high-quality collector's items develop security features that make imitation more difficult and support authenticity checks. Nevertheless, many collectors are concerned that they may have unintentionally acquired a product that is not original.

In most cases, the authenticity of a silver coin or medal cannot be reliably assessed based on a single characteristic. Only the interplay of various test characteristics allows for a well-founded assessment.

The most important indicators include weight, dimensions, material, minting image, rim design and origin (provenance). • Weight, thickness and diameter according to manufacturer's specifications
• Edge design
• Minting quality and detail accuracy
• Material composition
• Density of the material
• Hallmarks, e.g. a hallmark issued by an independent testing body
• Magnetic behaviour
• Selective surface coatings and gemstones (if present)
• Sound (only as a supplementary feature)
• Origin and documentation
• Original packaging and certificate of authenticity (if available)

None of these characteristics alone provides reliable proof of authenticity. Modern counterfeits can replicate individual features very accurately. Only the totality of all test characteristics allows for a sound assessment.

For high-quality collector coins, non-destructive testing methods such as X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF), ultrasonic measurements or density measurements are used, depending on the issue.
