6.3 Why Do Micro-Scratches Form on Coins?

Many collectors discover fine lines or superficial scratches on coins or medals when examining them closely or under certain lighting conditions. This often raises the question of whether these marks were already present during manufacturing or whether they were caused later by handling, packaging, or storage.

Micro-scratches are extremely fine mechanical changes to the surface that are often barely visible or not visible at all to the naked eye. They can occur during various stages of a coin's or medal's life cycle – for example during manufacturing, quality control, packaging, transportation, or subsequent handling.

Particularly on reflective surfaces, such as those found on coins struck in Proof (PP) quality, even the finest surface changes can become clearly visible.

Not every fine surface mark represents a quality defect. Relevant factors include the extent of the mark, its visibility under normal viewing conditions, and the respective quality requirements of the manufacturer.

 

Explanation

Micro-scratches are caused by mechanical contact between the surface and another material. Even the smallest particles, dust, unsuitable cleaning cloths, or improper handling can leave fine marks.

Possible causes include:

• Contact with hard or contaminated surfaces
• Dust or dirt particles
• Contact with fingers or fingernails
• Improper cleaning
• Movement inside unsuitable packaging

To avoid micro-scratches as much as possible, coins and medals should only be handled when necessary and should preferably be held by their edges. Even with careful handling, it is not always possible to completely avoid fine contaminants, such as dust particles or droplets of liquid that can be produced while speaking. This is one of the reasons why it is recommended to keep collectibles in their original packaging whenever possible. Micro-scratches can occur particularly when attempting to remove such particles or droplets from the surface. Suitable protective packaging as well as clean and careful handling make an important contribution to preserving the original condition over the long term.
