6.1 Why Do Silver Coins Tarnish?

Collectors generally know that the surface of a silver coin can change. In this context, people often refer to what is known as tarnishing. While some coins remain virtually unchanged for many years, others develop a yellowish, golden, blue, or dark gray discoloration. This often raises the question of why silver tarnishes in the first place, what causes this process, and whether tarnishing can be prevented.

 

Answer

Silver tarnishes because it chemically reacts with certain substances in its environment. Sulfur-containing compounds in the air in particular can react with the silver and form a thin layer of silver sulfide on the surface. This natural process is known as tarnishing.

How quickly and to what extent silver tarnishes depends, among other things, on the composition of the metal, environmental conditions, storage, and the condition of the surface. Tarnishing is fundamentally a natural chemical process and is not an indication of poor material quality.

 

Explanation

Silver is a comparatively reactive precious metal. Unlike gold, it reacts readily with various substances in its environment. In particular, sulfur-containing compounds, which can occur in small quantities in the air, lead over time to the formation of a thin layer of silver sulfide on the surface.

Depending on the thickness of this layer, the color of the coin or medal changes. Initially, yellowish or slightly golden hues often appear. As the reaction progresses, brown, purple, blue, or dark gray to almost black discoloration can develop. Which colors appear and how quickly they develop depends on numerous influencing factors.

The most important factors include:

· Humidity
· Temperature
· Sulfur-containing substances in the environment
· Air pollutants
· Alloy
· Surface condition
· Type of packaging

Fingerprints can also locally accelerate tarnishing, as skin oils and salts can promote chemical reactions on the surface.

Not every silver coin tarnishes at the same rate. Even two coins from the same issue can develop differently due to slight differences in storage conditions as well as variations and tolerances in manufacturing and processing.

With modern collector coins, tarnishing is often regarded as a change to the original condition. At the same time, there are collectors who consider naturally occurring toning (patina) aesthetically pleasing or regard it as an indicator of the object's authenticity. The assessment can depend on the particular collecting field as well as the preferences of the collector or prospective buyer.

 

Silver tarnishing cannot be completely prevented, but it can often be significantly slowed down through appropriate measures and storage conditions. A dry, clean, and stable environment, as well as storage in the original storage system or in suitable coin capsules, is recommended. Direct contact with the skin should be avoided.

Tarnishing that has already occurred should not be removed hastily by cleaning. Improper cleaning attempts can permanently alter the original surface and impair collector value more severely than the natural discoloration itself.
