The English term “Proof” is frequently used for modern collector coins and medals. Many collectors wonder what exactly this term means.
 

Answer

“Proof” is the English term for the minting quality “Polierte Platte” (PP). In most cases, both terms describe the same high-quality minting quality.

Characteristic features include reflective surfaces, particularly careful production, and high requirements for surface quality. The reflective surfaces are created through a specially coordinated manufacturing and minting process and not through subsequent polishing of the finished coin or medal. The term “Proof” is used internationally by many mints and manufacturers. In German-speaking countries, however, the term “Polierte Platte (PP)” is commonly used.

Depending on the mint or manufacturer, individual manufacturing processes or quality requirements may differ. For collectors, the actual surface quality achieved and the manufacturing standards of the respective manufacturer are therefore particularly important.

Product descriptions often use terms such as “Proof,” “Proof Quality,” “Proof Finish,” or “Polierte Platte (PP).” These terms generally refer to the same minting quality.

 

The designation “Proof” says just as little about the precious metal content or collector value of a coin or medal as “Polierte Platte.” It primarily describes the minting quality. Factors such as rarity, demand, condition, and originality are among those that determine collector value.
